This thread is basically advising if you haven't already update your windows systems now, there is a cyber attack that is hitting the world demanding a ransome to get your files back it's known as 'wannacry'. FedX, Telefonica and hospitals in the UK have been hit by this. To install this go into settings and click Update & Security and then download the latest update or click the windows icon in the corner and type 'windows update'. Even if you don't believe in this it's always better to be safe than sorry. Shoutout to @Matt for making me aware of this and telling me I can prevent it.
1st, and I was aware of this so first thing I do in the morning is update windows and scan for malwares ;)
I read somewhere that Avast does a good job of countering this. But - if the malware's main goal is to encrypt - I wouldn't be so sure lol. Avast could be a good option until you're able to install the latest patch. Would be nice to some of the 'Windows defence' things do something for once. Lmao.
it does do stuff, in fact I scanned my computer and realised I had some adware (I think) which it got rid of Just because it can't get rid of the big stuff doesn't mean it can't get rid of the little. I'd expect someone like you to know that? -- I'm surprised people manually update when they are aware of these dangers. I set it so whenever I turn off my system or restart, it updates. I could've just saved my computer by doing this, but even if I did have this malware I'd let them take my files. I have a lot of crap I don't need but can't be bothered to delete. If they delete my system files tho rip rip
No. I honestly expect it to get rid of 'big stuff'. That was my point. Why is it even there? It's meant to be developed by Microsoft, a company worth over 100 billion, with the most commonly used OS in the world, and yet the built-in defender allows ransomware to just slide on in? The most popular OS' built-in defender allows tens-of-thousands of computer files to be encrypted and blackmailed off? What a dumpster-fire. I'm tired of Windows Defender. It is like nagware, more than anything. Always spewing the same old 'Windows Defender' isn't on rubbish. It's a piece of junk, a ****stain on what's meant to be a great OS.. -- I've read more on it. I have to say I'm ashamed at our national health service. I mean seriously? 'Medical records cannot be accessed' said someone I spoke to, now who's fault is that? If a hospital's computer system can just be infected like this, then boy-oh-boy are we all in trouble.
Windows Defender has its use in a lot of situations however when tested properly you begin to realize it's not preventing a whole lot. Might as well have Norton on your computer. Although Norton would only be worse. There are advantages and disadvantages to manually updating and automatically updating.
I prefer to automatically update because I haven't had any issues with doing so hey good thing there's a country called Australia~ and the reason windows doesn't spend time on making their own anti virus is because there's plenty of third-party anti viruses out there, so Windows has no need to worry.
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/search.aspx?q=4012598 Lots of people reporting that Windows update is failing. Above is the link to where you can manually download the MS17-010 security update.
yea it was so dangerous even tho it died before it could affect Australia!!!! woh $55,000 that the ransomware got!!??!?! woahhhh!! but actually tho the people behind the virus were dumb af making a kill switch on a unregistered domain
