First and foremost. I want to give full credit to Krissy_Punk. A Skyblock member (and now a Mineverse member too!) who wrote this awesome guide. Here is a link to her profile on Skyblock: http://www.skyblock.net/members/krissy_punk.22286/ And here is her Mineverse profile: http://www.mineverse.com/members/krissy_punk.2973/ And here is a link to the original: http://www.skyblock.net/threads/tips-for-chat-being-courteous-to-your-fellow-skyblockers.43046 (I got permission from Krissy before I copied this over here.) Anyway, here is the guide. Enjoy it, and please, listen to its great advice. 1. Swearing: Now swearing is not allowed in chat anyway, but some people like to do it anyway. Now I have a problem with this since a lot of the time it is the younger members of the community swearing like a trooper because their parents don't need to check on their child's game playing. Swearing is ok in everyday conversation once or twice if you are an adult. But since most of the server is under 18, no one is allowed to swear. To be respectable, i highly suggest no one to use swear words, even in short for such as calling each other feg for fun, or using fkn, or other such words. Another thing is that using the "*" symbol is also no recommended. It implies censorship. saying **** in chat automatically will translate in to the "f" word or the "S" word depending on the context. Saying you meant to say fish will not sit well with the mods since blind Freddy would still know what u mean. I do not respect those who cannot even follow a simple rule of no swearing, and feel the need to swear at all. Its not cool, its trashy. Just don't participate in it, and report those who do. 2. Name calling and labeling: This doesn't result in any discipline until it gets out of hand and rude (or racist), but name calling and labeling people is just plain bullying. It is NEVER ok to name call people and it is very discriminatory to label people. If you call your friend a name its ok. Just keep it clean. But also remember that anything you do, is setting an example to the other players. Start name calling and suddenly you find a bunch of other people doing the same, but to people they don't know. Then it become a bullying problem, and even cyber bullying can be tough to deal with. The simple way to remedy any name calling is to simply keep it private. We don't need to see you abuse your friends through chat... 3. No is No Its often hard to tell when a person is fed up with you because most people are too polite to tell you what they really think. So just follow these things to ensure you don't cross the line. When people say no, it is for a reason. If you ask someone if they want to join you for something and they say no, don't beg, and don't message the same question over again (Or tpa request.). This becomes spam and the person can chose to report you. Begging is a sign that you are becoming desperate. It is best, if you are becoming desperate, to step away from the computer, drink some water, get some fresh air and come back. Try to understand, as well, that some people feel bad saying no, and will do what you ask but are not having a good time. Ask yourself: are you being too pushy and forceful? are you guilt tripping? did i send too many of the same messages? A general rule of thumb is that if you send one message and get no reply but the person chats, then they are not interested and its time to move on, or send one more message just in case they didn't see. If you get no response and they are not chatting, wait until they chat again to talk. And finally give up to 30 seconds for a reply. Don't start spamming people with question marks. Its annoying, and not everyone can type over 60 words per minute. Patience. 4. When people say stop...learn from your mistakes: when you find yourself posting something wrong, maybe you swore or spammed a little, and someone tells you to stop, you must stop! The only reason someone would tell you off in chat is because you have broken a rule. If you continue to be stubborn, you will be punished, and furthermore people will lose respect for you because you cannot show that you are mature enough to accept your fault and learn from your mistake. Sure, you may feel embarrassed, but to gain respect you must apologize and not repeat offend. 5. Attention seeking: Now this is a thing im going to touch on because everyone want to feel like they belong, and a whole bunch of people use color, symbols, caps etc to gain viewers attention. But here's where it gets annoying and becomes very inconsiderate. If you feel like you need attention, do not use too much personal feelings. Saying you are sad to gain attention is different to someone who is actually sad because someone they know is in hospital. If you say you feel sad give a reason, or don't say it at all. Also repeating posts about how sad you are prove that you are only doing it to gain attention. again say it once, give a reason and people will console you if they want to. Most people do care if you are upset but its those who say they are sad regularly with no reason or the same reason over again are the ones that are seeking attention. A surefire way to lose respect is to act bratty and expect that people have to bow down to your every word. There are so many other things to do with being considerate on chat and it seems like a lot of rules just for chatting. But we, general community and moderators need to keep chat fun and child friendly at all times, as well as being courteous and considerate to all staff and members. "It's really easy for people to get out of hand behind a keyboard. It's always good to remember there are people on the other end of what you type. Real people with emotions and thoughts just like you, and words can hurt. That's really all I have to say. :D" keeper_of_flame If theres anything you take away from this is one simple rule to being a good member If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all
Thanks for this Poke, a great thread for information to new members or people who don't know a lot of this on how to act appropriately in the chat, something always necessary of course.
Ah. Well, thanks for bringing it here, in case some of the community was unaware of its existence or didn't see it on the other forums.
I've had problems with practically everything on this list and it's annoying ;A; ahhh Krissy is a smart girl. Tell her I say thank you if you can <3
