https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/47bt3r/mojang_are_starting_to_crack_down_on_servers Mojang is starting to crack down servers infringing the EULA. If you don't understand this; basically a while ago Mojang updated their EULA so that minecraft servers were not allowed to ask for donations or accept money from someone or something like that. At first nothing happened and servers continued to accept donations and stuff, but now it seems that something is happening! - Poperz the messanger
I can't click on the Mojang website links (at school) but is that actually a reliable source of information?
I think Notch told the community on how he hated server donations, and him getting angry emails from parents asking for their missing 200 dollars, though he wasn't behind it.
I think it might be true on the who cracking down thing. I used to play one server about 2 years ago. I played for a pretty long time. Then randomly one day it was gone (eh this happened like 3 months ago but I played it 2 years ago) . I recently saw a new server open up with the same name and in its description it said New Eula conforming *server name here* trying not to advertise. So I am guessing it did get shut down or forced to comply.
I don't believe this would be true. Multiplayer is a major part of minecraft, and most people play minecraft for the multiplayer feature. Imagine how much money Microsoft/Notch would be losing if they cracked down. Because no ranks means no money for host. So no server.
People can still donate for ranks and such, they just can't have any advantages over other players, for example, cosmetic items such as pets and hats would be allowed but kits wouldn't since they provide an advantage over other plays. Servers such as Mineplex and Hypixel already comply with this and people still buy ranks for those servers.
I don't think Mojang would do something like this.. we first need to actually make this official by Mojang themselves
