I absolutely agree with you.
It's not only MC forums that handle it like this, but most forums sites. We make such a big deal out of stupid ratings.

You locked your profile due to these ratings. If it wasn't such a big deal you wouldn't have locked it.

The only thing that has been clearified is that the rate abuse rule is meaningless yet also problematic. Even some of the staff share similar opinions as us, yet they still keep this "rule." No other community makes ratings an issue but this one.

Research on what. That no other community makes ratings such a huge ordeal, or as to why the Mods all shut their profiles down?

 

Not all the mods locked their profiles.

 

The majority did. Only a few who weren't "rate abused" didn't lock their profiles.

 

If you want a real solution to this, get rid of all the trophies which reward for likes or ratings and replace them with something else e.g. number of messages.

 

I locked my profile so that my statuses that I've posted here during my stay over the last 2 years would not be removed due to someone who is angry and spiteful. Making alt accounts on VPNs and mass liking statuses to troll members. I don't care about my "likes" on the statuses as much as I do about the memories they hold for me. (feel free to make fun of me for that all you like...)

The ratings are not leaving. Which is why I we are looking to better clarify the rules. I'm not making this thread so that we have an argument, but rather a solution. I don't see the harm in that.

No clarifying what abuse is or how to avoid it.
No mention of what rate abuse is at all actually.

Just ignore them. If they're gonna be hellish because of your efforts to try and improve the situation and help the community, let them. Don't feed them.

The spamming of any rating is disallowed.

 

You sure? I see some people spam useful or informative white a lot.

 

Then they're doing something they shouldn't be doing.

Just remove the trophies related to ratings and switch them with time based things. One reason the rate abuse is such a problem is with people wanting active and well known member status. Well known should only be possible if you've been on the forums for more than a year and active should take 3-6 months to achieve not 3-10 days as I've started to see.

Rate abuse is only a problem due to the trophies, so, why not change the trophies then?

 

Replacing trophies would spark outrage. Likely, many people would lose Active Member and such and how is that fair to the people who earned the title?
We already have message trophies, and replacing the ratings trophies with more message trophies would lead to spam. We already have enough people posting 'lol' and 'k' on threads.
