This was probably because you voted while off infection, then when you join you received the 3 levels plus a lucky 2 extra levels. But there is a glitch in infection, where when you vote off infection, when you join you receive the levels, but after that, when you die or re-join, your levels from voting disappear. If you want to keep your levels on infection, make sure you're on infection when you vote.
