At any given time, you might not be able to connect to any Minecraft server. You check your Internet Connection. That's working fine. Proxy settings. Okay. Basically everything is working and doing what its supposed to. The website is working, your computer is functioning ok, you can get on any other website [Facebook, Youtube, Twitter etc...] So what's going on with Minecraft? Well, there is this site: http://xpaw.ru/mcstatus/ Basically, that will show you the stats of how Minecraft is currently running. It will show you if you are able to Login or not if you have changed your skin or you are one of those kids who logs out of Minecraft everyday. The Session is if Minecraft servers are working. If its down, then the Minecraft servers are all down The Website, is if www.minecraft.net is working or not. The Legacy Skins will show if you are able to see Skins from your POV or if you are a steve or not. Finally, Realms, which is really not important unless you use it.
