      Greetings!

I posted a question about chests on Factions and got a few interesting ideas.

Elrak mentioned creeper eggs which fascinated me in how you could get a hostile mob to blow up chests for you even if the chests were immersed in water. That got me thinking about a chest vault design that could prevent (maybe) the placement of creeper eggs.

But in my enthusiasm to thwart creeper eggs I overlooked one obvious point that makes this invalid in Factions: others can open your chests directly if you do not have blocks over them. :) This is an exercise in fun, not in actual practical value (at least not yet anyway).

Well, back to the drawing board I guess. At this point in time I'm thinking perhaps I can modify the window to use redstone and a sticky piston to open and close it so others cannot access the chests. Only those who are authorized to place a lever can activate the piston to open it.

Anyway, here is a vault that contains 13 double chests that is only accessible from a window. This prevents control over the placement of creeper eggs and "may" prevent the spawned creeper from blowing up the chests. If a creeper is able to blow up any chests, the joke is on the griefer because they cannot collect the items. Unfortunately the items will despawn so they will be lost but at least the griefers cannot profit from their raid.

An idea that I had was to install in the floor a series of hoppers and more chests buried in solid obsidian so if a chest above is destroyed, then there is the possibility that some of the contents can be captured and stored for retrieval later. I'll be skipping the hopper idea in the "real" build because 1) I heard hoppers do not work in Factions and 2) I have nothing valuable anyway and probably will be storing just dirt, cobble, and other rocks in there. :) Oh yeah, and stacks of coal... you never know if the coal may ever spontaneously convert to diamonds.

      Overview of Assumptions:
As I stated above, the goal is to design a vault that will make creeper egg attacks impossible or at least difficult. The other goal is that if an attack is successful then to prevent the griefers from accessing the spilled contents. This build assumes the griefer will not be able to directly break or set blocks, or open chests.

      Layout of Chests:
There are three stacks of chests. These photos show the construction of the prototype so the earlier placement of the chests are not the full and final configuration. I first tried a stack of three then by testing through the window, I found the left and right stacks could have 5 chests. The middle stack can only have three since when it had 5 the top and bottom could not be opened through the window.

The left and right stacks, which have 5 double chests each (photos are prototpes so they are not all doubles) and they face the window. The center stack are double wide chests and they are turned 90 degress so from the window you are looking at the side of the chests. In this prototype I did not place all double wide chests in this prototype so some of them are facing the window which will not be the case in the final build. I should also point out that at first I did not plan on the center stack so I had to cut a hole in the wall to place them. :) Glad I did not build this prototype in obsidian! :)

      Window:
I think before I start sharing the photos I need to mention that there is only a 1 square window that will allow access to all 13 chests. This prevents the user from getting too close or manipulating the chests. Hopefully it help to prevent or reduce griefing?

Layout of the chests. A stack of 5 on the left and right. Final version will use only double chests. The center stack can only be three high or you cannot reach them through the window.

Side view with placement of torches under glass for illumination when water filled. Could have a few more blocks in height with the torches. The final vault will be one block deeper in depth and the rear torches will look more like the front ones. The window can be seen to the right.

Overhead view showing layout. Keep in mind that the center stack of chests will be doubles and will be rotated 90 degrees. The window can be seen in the lower right corner by the torch.

View of the "window" with the chests seen inside. The pit in front of the window allows for two different heights to access higher and lower chests. The pit has a half-slab in the bottom so it is not a full drop.

Looking through the window. Notice you can only see 4 chests on the right side; that's why the pit is required so you can access the 5th chest which is currently out of view.

Closer view of window and pit.

View through window standing outside of the pit. Notice the lowest level chest on the left? You can only see the top-right-rear corner which is enough to open and access it. This also may hint to the importance of having light inside the obsidian vault so you can find it. :)

Standing on the other side of the pit. Notice the cross-hairs are on the lower chest which is barely visible.

Final outside view of this prototype. Window is the only access point.

That's it for the prototype. I'm going to build the obsidian version in the next few days. For now I think I will provide an access portal so I can add the redstone and sticky piston later.

Disclaimer... I have nothing of value and so this "vault" contains nothing of value... so please don't come looking for it. :) LOL!

Please! If you have ideas or suggestions on how to improve this design please let me know and I will try to incorporate in the next obsidian version. But please keep in mind that this is more so a fun exercise and I realize it will not be perfect as it is now.

Thanks so much for reading... hope you enjoyed. :)

      I almost forgot...

Here I am accessing the chests when standing on top of the pit and down in the pit.

      Image 2016-03-12 00_42_47 001_cr_480.png
On top of the pit so I can access the lowest level chests on the left or right-hand sides.

      Thanks!

      Thanks!

Please tell me more... I want to learn all that I can. :)

What makes it an easy raid?

The HUGE assumptions are as follows. I understand these assumption "may not" be typical of MineVerse in general.
      1. the vault it is made of obsidian and not stone
      2. it is filled with water with the only access through a one block square with the closest chests being three blocks away from the opening.
      3. you cannot directly open chests since it is a protected/restricted area.
I'm assuming that being three to four blocks away from the chests and not having movement "inside" (ie... no direct access inside) then it will be next to impossible to place creeper eggs in the right place? Besides once the creeper blows up a chest, how do you collect the loot before the loot despawns?

Hm... this may be a scenario that could exist in MineVerse Factions... You are infiltrating an enemy faction and became a member. There is a restricted chunk that is only accessible to officers and the owner and someone left a door open to their treasure room. No other faction members are online and you want to see what treasures are for the taking. Can you do it without using TNT or massive kill-offs to take over territory?

Tangent Idea: Wow... I just thought of an indirect way to attack a base and claim their land and they would be powerless to stop it. What if... you infiltrate and bring a few dozen of your friends along. In moment of glee, that faction claims too much land (actually they may not even have to do that). Then you pvp with your "friends" some place else and just keep killing each other until you drive down the faction's strength until you can take over the good parts that are claimed through another member in your real faction...

Oh yeah, in regards to another reply... "ts;ir;" :) LOL... I'm "always" being told I write too much or I take on too much. I'm almost done with a build (another week???) where I've mined out about 25,000+ blocks to build just one structure and I'm not even sure it will work! Same principals probably are applying in both areas: writing and building. Fun and obsessive. :)

Obby gets destroyed in 1 hit of tnt. I'd get all those items in 5 minutes of raiding.

Also factions doesn't have creeper eggs anyway.
