At the beginning of my 7th grade year, our teacher was telling us how at the end of each year she liked to host a program for all the other classes where we sang songs and did other things like you would do in Sunday school. She asked if anyone in our class knew how to play the guitar. Well, it just so happened I had gotten a guitar the previous Christmas, so I of course volunteered. Guitar players are cool dudes, right? Well maybe they are, but I was not a guitar player. I had picked it up about three times since I had gotten it, but just assumed I could learn a couple songs, all written out on complex sheet music, in the six months or so before we actually did the thing. It really is a simple as I just never even bothered to learn the song, or the guitar at all. I was in lessons, but couldn't even keep in time with anything. I was awful, but I was too embarrassed to say anything to my teacher, so I just hoped maybe she'd forget. Well, it gets to the big day - oh, which was also my 13th birthday - and I just show up without my guitar and sit down. The teacher gets there and was like "where's your guitar?" and I used the classic "oh that was today?" After telling me that yes it was the day and scrambling to figure out how we were going to have music for the program, she decided there would be no musical accompaniment. Which would've probably been fine, but what she hadn't told us was that her daughter, a professional singer, was going to sing along with me playing. So now her daughter had to sing alone, no music, in front of a room full of middle schoolers. It was icy. My worst birthday probably.
