The volume of the cup depends on which action has recently taken place on the liquid inside of it. If a person was drinking or pouring out the water, it would be half empty. If a person were filling it only to half, the cup is half full. Unless this is a metaphysical cup, and the liquid inside it generated from nowhere then it is merely at half volume capacity, neither full nor empty
