      No, you don't lose files. I believe you can make the choice to do so when you upgrade, but it's not required.

      Yes, you get to keep all your files such as Documents, Pictures Etc. All that will change is the operating system. However I recommend always keeping a backup thumb drive of all your important documents, pictures, whatever you can't stand to lose. 16 gigs or more depending on what you want to backup.
