If you go to 0.35 and 0.43 put the speed to 0.25 you can see he is using some kind of reach.

 

The one at 0.35 is him hitting me from 5 blocks. and at 0.43 he hits me from 4 blocks.

 

Also if you pause the video on the second hit at 0.35 you can see it is 5 blocks.
