I like them both. It would be awesome to own one, but my parents are allergic to their fur.

Probably a dog because I'd love to see someone break into my house and have my dog bite the face off of someone.

Cats vs dogs is an age old debate, both of them having their benefits and drawbacks, however both can make great companions. In terms of which it better, it will vary greatly from person to person. That still doesn't answer which is "better", and that can be very situational.

    First of, the doggo.
Now strictly speaking, a dog would be the better choice, if we are just weighing out pros and cons of having the animal. However these pros and cons are also, as mentioned, situational.
Dogs themselves have terrible short term memory, meaning that they will often quickly forget if you wrong them, meaning you can tease and harass them, and so long as it doesn't push it too far, they'll quickly forget and go back to loving you.
However, they have great long term memory. This means that they will never forget their connections and bonds that they form, and will remain loyal for years. This can also be a double edged sword, as if you harass a dog too much, they will never forget, not to mention, dogs are able to emulate the emotions of humans.
Depending on the breed, dogs can protect people and homes, as they can prove to be quite dangerous and territorial.
On the other hand, dogs are higher maintenance than cats, requiring more attention and work that can prove quite difficult if you are not able to tend for them properly.

Cats on the other hand, while lacking the same empathy and protection that dogs offer, tend to be much more therapeutic, lowering blood pressure and anxiety, as well as can offer close companionship that dogs can give.
However, the main selling point of cats, is their low maintenance. This means that cats are a lot easier to take care of than dogs, and thus make for better companions if you are not in a situation where you can take care of an animal well.

    Now what about "love"?
Something that people look for in animals, is a connection with them. Companionship and affection.
While both can be quite affectionate, I have to give this one to the dog. The reasons for this are simple, because unlike cats, dogs, actually love you.
Research has been done into this topic, which shows that the part of the brain that controls the emotion "love", was active in the case of dogs when interacting with their owners, while not being active with cats.

    Final conclusion?
Dogs are loving and loyal, but high maintenance and troublesome at times.
Cats are affectionate, therapeutic, and low maintenance, but lack the same level of love and loyalty that dogs offer.
    So what is the verdict?
    Why not both!

Cats, they're more independent and they don't worry.

They also won't worry if you got involved in a car accident and end up dying.

probably only used that specific example from Red Dog, the sequel is coming out soon or it came out already idk
