I can really feel the "OPness" of the donor kits now due to the lack of op zombies and the lack of items such as fire swords, bows for zombies et cetera, to balance the game play out.

It's not, I can join server on normal 1.8

 

The blacklist hasn't been implemented as per say yet, but rather the code is in the 1.9.3 pre-version which will not allow the Minecraft client to connect the server blacklisted.
